Our Founder’s Story
IRock My Scars began with one woman’s journey of turning pain into purpose.
In late 2014, at just 36 years old, Cathy L. Parker was diagnosed with breast cancer. What began as a shocking, life-altering event became the catalyst for a movement. Now a five-time young survivor, Cathy has lived through the realities of cancer in a way few can imagine.
“Going through breast cancer makes you realize what’s important.”
— Cathy L. Parker, Founder of Irockmyscars, Inc.
As an experienced counselor, Cathy was astounded by how deeply her diagnoses affected her mental health. While her doctors prepared her for the physical realities, nothing could prepare her for the toll cancer took on her self-esteem and sense of identity.
Determined not to be defined by her illness, Cathy made the bold decision to reclaim her power by proudly embracing her scars instead of hiding them. What started as a personal act of courage evolved into a social media campaign—and then into the growing community movement now known as I Rock My Scars.
Along the way, Cathy also challenged the harmful language often used around illness. Words like “losing the battle” felt painful and isolating, especially for those living with such a debilitating condition. In response, she introduced the term “Rebels”—a badge of honor for those who face trauma head-on with resilience and defiance. For Cathy and for countless others, being a Rebel means transforming scars into strength and rewriting the narrative of survival.
Today, Cathy’s vision continues to inspire the work of Irockmyscars, Inc. Through art and music workshops, empowerment retreats, housing support, and healing resources, the organization stands with Rebels during the toughest periods of their lives. Together with donors, sponsors, and volunteers, we are building a world where scars are no longer hidden in shame, but celebrated as symbols of strength and survival.
“When I started this journey, I never imagined it would grow into a movement. My hope is that every Rebel finds strength in their scars and knows they are never alone. I invite you to join us in this mission of healing and empowerment.” – Cathy L. Parker
